Most supplement brands don’t lose a payment account because of a bad product. They lose it because the account was never built for supplements in the first place. A Nutraceutical Payment Gateway is a processing account underwritten specifically for supplement sales, with the reserve terms, dispute tools and billing features that vitamins, powders and subscriptions actually need.
Demand isn’t the problem. The Council for Responsible Nutrition’s 2024 survey found that 75 percent of Americans use dietary supplements
Key Takeaways
- A Nutraceutical Payment Gateway is underwritten for supplements up front, so a later business-type review is far less likely to close it.
- Underwriters review your checkout, claims, refund policy and dispute history, so prepare those before you apply.
- Visa’s merchant “Excessive” threshold fell to 1.5% on April 1, 2026, and acquirers usually act well before you reach it.
- Get reserve, settlement and fee terms in writing before you sign.
What Is a Nutraceutical Payment Gateway?
A Nutraceutical Payment Gateway lets a supplement business accept card payments through an acquiring bank that has reviewed and approved supplements as a category. The key difference from a standard account is the underwriting. The bank knows what you sell and how you sell it from day one, so the terms reflect that.
A standard account or payment aggregator often works at first and fails later. Their acceptable-use terms commonly exclude supplements, continuity billing or both, so the account can be reviewed and closed once volume or disputes grow. A dedicated account trades a longer application for stability. Webpays offers high-risk merchant accounts and a PCI DSS-certified payment gateway with multi-currency and multi-language checkout options.
Why Do Processors Treat Supplements as High Risk?
Processors see a pattern, not a product. Supplements combine health claims, card-not-present sales and often recurring billing, and each one raises dispute exposure.
The FDA doesn’t approve supplements or their labels before sale, and the FTC expects health claims to be supported by evidence. When a customer feels a product didn’t deliver, a dispute is the fastest remedy. Nearly all supplement sales happen online, which adds fraud exposure, and subscriptions give an unhappy customer a new chance to dispute every month.
Underwriters price that pattern. They aren’t judging your formula.
What Do Underwriters Ask for in a Nutraceutical Payment Gateway Application?
They review your business the way a skeptical customer would. Have these ready before you apply:
- Checkout screenshots showing price, billing frequency and the consent step before card fields
- Product pages that use structure/function language rather than disease claims, with the standard disclaimer in place
- Refund, shipping and cancellation policies that your site actually enforces
- Reminder emails for renewals and trial conversions, with timing
- Processing history, including any closed accounts, plus projected monthly volume and average ticket
- Business and ownership documents for standard KYC and KYB checks
Underwriters often ask for more than first-time applicants expect, so gathering everything first shortens approval. Third-party certification of your catalog and claims can also help. supplement merchant account application checklist → WebPays application guide
What Should a Nutraceutical Payment Gateway Do?
A nutraceutical payment gateway should keep renewals approving and give you early warning on disputes. The account decides whether you can process. The gateway decides how well you process.
| Gateway feature | Why it matters for supplements |
| Tokenized card-on-file billing | Bills subscribers on schedule without storing card numbers |
| Flexible billing intervals | Monthly, six-week and quarterly cadences match how people use products |
| Account updater / network tokens | Reissued cards refresh automatically instead of failing at renewal |
| Soft-decline retry rules | Spaced retries recover revenue; same-day hammering looks like card testing |
| Fraud screening | Cuts card-not-present fraud before it becomes a dispute |
| Pre-dispute alerts and reporting | Lets you refund early and spot problem cohorts |
Availability depends on the acquiring bank and the gateway, so ask for each feature by name and confirm it’s live on the account you’re offered.
How Does Nutraceutical Payment Processing Work With Subscriptions?
Subscription supplement sales must meet federal consent rules and card-network rules at the same time. Getting both right removes disputes before they happen.
The FTC’s “click-to-cancel” rule is not in force. On July 8, 2025, the Eighth Circuit vacated the entire rule on procedural grounds (Cooley, retrieved 2026-10-01). The Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act still applies. It requires clear disclosure of material terms, express informed consent and a simple way to cancel. The FTC isn’t standing still either: a March 2026 advance notice of proposed rulemaking began a new effort to revive negative-option rules (BCLP via JD Supra, retrieved 2026-10-01).
In practice, show the full price and billing frequency before the card fields, get an affirmative click, remind customers before renewals and trial conversions, and make cancelling as easy as signing up. Offers built on subscribe-and-save, where the discount and price are plain, tend to be easier to underwrite than free trials that convert to paid. Give subscribers pause and skip options, because a customer who can delay a box rarely disputes the charge. Use a billing descriptor with your brand name and a phone number or website, since an unrecognized charge is a common cause of disputes from happy customers.
How Do VAMP Thresholds Affect Your Nutraceutical Payment Gateway?
Visa’s merchant Excessive threshold dropped from 2.2% to 1.5% on April 1, 2026 in the U.S., Canada, the EU, Asia-Pacific and Latin America, while CEMEA stays at 2.2% (Redo, retrieved 2026-10-01). The VAMP ratio is fraud reports plus disputes, divided by settled transactions.
| Level | Ratio | Applies to |
| Merchant, Excessive | 1.5% | U.S., Canada, EU, APAC, LATAM |
| Merchant, Excessive | 2.2% | CEMEA |
| Acquirer, Above Standard | 0.5% | Acquirer portfolio |
| Acquirer, Excessive | 0.7% | Acquirer portfolio |
Here is what this means in practice. Redo reports that the merchant ratio only applies once you reach 1,500 fraud-plus-dispute events in a month, though sources describe the floor slightly differently, so confirm with your acquirer. At a 1.5% ratio, that implies roughly 100,000 settled transactions a month before Visa’s merchant threshold applies at all. Most supplement brands are far smaller, yet their acquirer’s portfolio is judged against the tighter 0.7% line. A merchant sitting at 1% can be a problem for its acquirer, which then responds with limits, reserves, remediation or offboarding. Reported fees for Excessive status run $8 per fraud or dispute transaction (Merchant Cost Consulting, retrieved 2026-10-01).
Plan around your processor internal limit, not Visa’s public number. Review fraud reports, disputes and settled counts weekly by acquisition source and sign-up month, so a bad campaign or a confusing renewal email shows up in its first billing cycle. Keep evidence for every sale: enrollment timestamp, IP address, consent record, reminders sent, tracked shipment and portal logins.
How Do You Compare Nutraceutical Payment Gateway Providers?
Compare providers on written terms, not sales promises. Ask each one the same questions:
- Which acquiring banks sit behind the account, and do they approve supplements and recurring billing in writing?
- What are the reserve percentage, hold period and release schedule?
- What are all fees, including onboarding, monthly, per-transaction and chargeback fees?
- What are the settlement timing and payout rules, and are any conditions attached?
- What happens if disputes rise? Who gets the alert, and what’s the remediation process?
- Which gateway features are live on your account today?
A provider that answers these clearly, with documents, has earned a closer look. Evasive answers, or terms that only appear after you’ve paid a fee, are your cue to walk away.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a supplement business get a Nutraceutical Payment Gateway?
Yes, through providers that underwrite supplements and, if you sell subscriptions, recurring billing. Expect your checkout, claims and policies to be reviewed, and expect terms such as a reserve that reflect the category.
What’s the difference between a Nutraceutical Payment Gateway and a nutraceutical payment gateway?
The merchant account is the bank-backed arrangement that lets you receive card funds. The gateway is the software that captures payments, stores tokens and runs billing and fraud tools. You need both to work together.
Why do standard processors close supplement accounts?
Their terms often exclude supplements, continuity billing or both. The account may run fine until renewals or disputes grow, then a review closes it for business type.
Does nutraceutical payment processing require a rolling reserve?
Often, particularly for newer brands and subscription models. Terms vary by acquirer and risk profile, so get the percentage, hold period and release schedule in writing.
Is the FTC’s click-to-cancel rule in effect?
No. The Eighth Circuit vacated it in July 2025. ROSCA still applies, and the FTC began a new rulemaking in March 2026, per the sources above.
